Get to Know Your Lawyer – Gary Sergent

June 3, 2016  |  Gary Sergent

Having a family history rooted in the hills of Harlan, a small town in the south eastern part of the Commonwealth – Harlan County, Gary appreciates the close-knit community that is Northern Kentucky.  It has the friendly feel of home while also being a culturally rich environment.  The diversity of entertainment in this area is one thing Gary appreciates.  Whether it’s visiting a locally owned restaurant, attending a Bengals game, or listening to live tunes at the Southgate House Revival (he will never miss an opportunity to hear Los Straitjackets play), Gary enjoys the many activities that NKY and Cincinnati have to offer.  No matter what Gary is up to though, he brings his family along for the fun.

Gary attended Park Hills Elementary, Turkeyfoot Middle, and Dixie Heights High School in Kenton County.  This year marks his 45th class reunion.  If you ask Gary what his proudest moment is, he’ll tell you about his family.  Gary’s parents instilled in him a strong ethic to get a good education, and Gary has done that for each of his children.  The birth of his children, witnessing their achievements, and spending time with his five grandchildren are some of the greatest joys in Gary’s life.  Every now and then you might see Gary’s wife of over 40 years, Durinda, drop by the office for a visit with their youngest grandson, Isaac.  It is so wonderful how a small gesture like that can brighten someone’s day.

What’s the best advice Gary would give to future generations?  “Do your best, try your hardest and never give up.  Whatever you want to accomplish you can.  Stay involved, and be of service to others.  Remember, it's not about you.”  Gary is truly dedicated to serving both the legal and local community.  Many lawyers will seek his advice about cases they are handling.  He is very active with the Kentucky Bar Association and has served at least 20 years in some bar-related position.   He is currently serving his second term on the Board of Governors.  Gary volunteers as much as he can at Seven Hills Church, where he leads small groups and assists on special projects.  He has also been a member of the Christian Legal Society for the last several years.

Gary Sergent is a family man, mentor, leader, public servant, and an accomplished attorney.   O’Hara, Ruberg, Taylor, Sloan & Sergent is grateful to call him one of our own.
